Describe 1 technique you often use in your art, and how you developed that skill:
My work always will have texture carefully carved into each piece. It is important that the texture work in harmony with the shape and glaze that will be used. I want my work to offer a sense of calm and peacefulness. It takes years of practice to really develop your own style. It’s always fun to push the boundaries. Sometimes your mistakes turn into your most fabulous pieces.
Where does your subject matter come from? Where do you find inspiration?
The Pacific NW is stunningly beautiful. From the gentle patterns formed by clouds and coastal waves to the bark patterns on old growth stands. I often imagine if these elements could speak what would be their story.
What is special about the materials or tools you use in your work?
It is amazing to take a raw chunk of clay and to allow it to evolve into a work of art. I often gather textural pieces from nature. One tool that I most often use is simply a nail. You can achieve a great texture with that nail point. There’s something soothing and rhythmic about sitting and developing texture with a simple nail.
